Leinster TREC are going to be offering 'TREC CONNECT', a series of 4 connecting type exercises a week for the next 4 weeks. These are designed to do at home and out and about with your horse or pony.  The exercises are aimed at giving more confidence to horse/ rider and are specifically intended  towards the PTV section of TREC.

  • Exercise 1 Carrot stretch. One to the left, one to the right. Helps to make our horses/ponies supple. Horse/pony should keep all 4 feet still while stretching. Built up to 6 stretches each way.
  • Exercise 2 Flags. This helps to get our horses/ponies used to flapping objects. Start on the ground first. Fun exercise.
  • Exercise 3 Tarpaulin. Used a lot in PTV and sometimes D-TREC. Great way to get your horse/pony used to them. Start on the ground first. Good idea to get your horse/pony used to the different colours.
  • Exercise 4 Water. Again water obstacles will be in PTV events. Go to a river or stream, if not one near a big puddle. Teach your horse/pony to walk straight in with no hesitation. Nice exercise.
  • Exercise 5. Mounting, one thing we do a lot of in TREC is to mount our horse/pony. Can your horse/pony stand completely still as in the photos? Worth 10 points in the PTV if you can!
  • Exercise 6. Low Branches with curtains. Make sure you start on the ground with the sticks/ branches high enough up for easy clearance, a minimum of 35cm above the withers. If possible build up to cantering your horse/pony through. Good fun.
  • Exercise 7. Hola Hoop, not always as easy as it looks. Get your horse/pony to stand with their front feet inside the hoop. This is good practise for so many of the PTV obstacles and of course mounting.
  • Exercise 8. This is meant to be a scary object! At PTV's, MA's and D-TREC there can be very scary objects in the corners of the arena. Think of your own scary objects and perhaps first approach leading your horse/pony.
  • Exercise 9. Backwards. Again start on the ground, voice commands are good. Then carry into the saddle. Going backwards in TREC is definitely a necessary!!!
  • Exercise 10. Riding One Handed. Two new one handed obstacles have been added to TREC. The One Handed Slalom and the One Handed 8 Style. Again practise on the ground first, then in the saddle and teach your horse/pony what to do perfectly in the walk first, before you move onto trotting. Great fun! The rules with the spacing in between posts and barrels etc are in Downloads.
